A Journey Into The Past 

Offered in the Fall - October and November 
and Spring - April and May
Recommended for children in grades 3 - 8
Program Length - 90 minutes

  Program and Tour Sessions : 

  • THE MAYO STORY - A video shares the story of the Mayo family and the birth of the Mayo Clinic. (15 minutes)

  • LOUISE MAYO'S KITCHEN - Learn about Louise Mayo in her 1860 period kitchen. Learn about her life on the Minnesota frontier, the family's involvement in the U.S. Dakota Conflict of 1862, and other experiences.  Children invited to help with chores.  Refreshments served. (20 minutes)

  • MEDICINE AND DR. MAYO - Visit Dr. Mayo's small office and learn about his education, medical practice and instruments used in the 1860 period. (10 minutes)

  • MAYO HOME TOUR - Visit the remaining rooms of the historic home - living room, parlor, bedroom and millinery room.  Learn about technology, lifestyle and furnishings of the 1860 period. (30 minutes)

  • MAYOVIEW HISTORY CENTER - Video (mentioned above) is shown in Center.  Children will also view Mayo family portraits and discuss the exhibit about the three generations of the Cosgrove family of Green Giant Company history who lived/were born in the historic home between 1874 and 1920.  Restrooms located in Center. (15 minutes)

  • THEN AND NOW GIFT SHOP - The history center houses a small gift shop where students may purchase period reproductions, educational items, books, souvenirs, candy, etc.
